Progeny Results

Progeny progression revealed through EBVs

Westholme is determined to be a leader in the development and application of Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) within the Wagyu breed. Our hope is that our consistent and extensive use of EBVs will motivate other Wagyu breeders to similar implementation.

At this stage, our herd and individual EBV results are featuring somewhat low ACC% (accuracy percentages). These will quickly increase over the next 12 months as many more progeny are registered from Westholme plus the various different breeders who purchase our genetics.

Westholme Herd EBVs are: (at March 2004)

HERD BWT 200 400 600 Milk SS EMA RIB RUMP RBY% IMF%
EBV +1.4 +11 +17 +23 +3 +0.2 +0.5 +0.1 +0.1 0.0 0.0

Weight gain comparison

The pages below are reproduced with the kind permission of Tony Fitzgerald, the manager of Macquarie Downs Feedlot at Leyburn, QLD. This information was supplied at the Annual Wagyu Symposium and Conference Field Day in November 2003.

We draw your attention to 400 day weight averages for the progeny of various sires. Whilst carcase marbling is a critical requirement, so too is carcase weight. We recommend you discount those sires where less than 7 head of progeny are recorded. However, putting this aside, the top 10 sires at Macquarie Downs for 400 day weight (averaged across their progeny) are:-

RANK SIRE HEAD 400 Day Avg (kg)
1 Westholme 001 Hirashige-tayasu 63 418.60
2 Itozurudoi 4 409.75
3 Itoshigefuji 2 408.50
4 Westholme 003 Kitateruyasudoi 2 367.00
5 Shikikan 4 364.50
6 Michifuku 3 354.00
7 Terutani 40/1 5 349.00
8 Sekidoi 12 331.17
9 Haruki 2 12 329.83
10 Ichiryuno 2 328.50
  Group Average 154 369.32

Westholme Sire 002 Itomoritaka has not been tested at Macquarie Downs. Our own weight schedule for 002 leads us to believe his ranking would be No. 1 or No. 2 in this group, but this belief is better eventually independently verified by Macquarie Downs.
