December 1999A• In September it was decided to offer bulls based in the USA & Australia for sale. During the last month all 32 USA based bulls have been sold. These were aged between 18 months and 2 years. All were sons of 001, 002 & 003 by Japan registered breeding females. There remain a limited number of Australian based bulls for sale. These are also sons of 001, 002 & 003 by registered Japanese breeding females and were flown to Australia during 1999.
B• Westholme Wagyu will ship its first group of feeder cattle to Japan on January 10th 2000. Approximately 54 head now undergoing quarantine requirements will be flown to Kansai International Airport arriving January 11th. Depending on eventual quarantine testing results a maximum of 5 females and 49 males all weighing in the vicinity of 280-300 kgs will be sold after clearing Japan quarantine to Westholme’s initial Japan based customers Excel Wagyu, E.T. Japan and a Japanese restaurant chain. These feeder cattle are the first shipment to Japan from Westholme Wagyu herds and from the Westholme Associate Gooree Park’s developing herd. A second shipment will be made around mid March 2000. Prices for these Wagyu equate with Japan prices for high quality feeder cattle born and raised in Japan. A meeting was held at Westholme Tarana in November to discuss the first shipment of feeder cattle from Westholme Wagyu and the Westholme Associate Gooree Park arriving in Japan in January 2000. Those in attendance included: Kajiura-san, President of Excel Wagyu; Don Nicol, Technical Consultant to Westholme Wagyu; Chris Walker; John Hardie, Property & Herd Manager, Westholme Tarana; Mike Inoue, Managing Director E.T. Japan and Daiji Imori, President E.T. Japan.
C• Outstanding Heifers Selected During November 1999, Daiji Imori inspected the Westholme Wagyu herds including Japan registered breeding females as well as bulls, steer calves and heifer calves. 5 heifers were culled from the young heifer herd having been judged by Daiji Imori as not of sufficiently high standard to become future donors. These females are joining their brothers in the first feeder cattle shipment to Japan. They will eventually enter a Japanese restaurant chain feedlot that specializes in female Wagyu for eventual meat consumption. Several other heifers were identified as of outstanding quality. Of these U24, a daughter of 003 born 3.5.99 was selected by Daiji Imori as a Japan prize winning heifer.
