Below is the archived announcement for the 2005 Annual Sale.

The first ever Sale of Westholme Wagyu Females, April 29th.

The Females chosen for this sale vary in age from 2 years (Y drop) to 6 years (U drop). The older cows have all been flushed for good results. Every Female has been pregnancy tested in calf by Doug Fowler of Australian Livestock Scanning Services on 3 March 2005, and many also have a calf at foot.

All Females in this sale have either been GeneSTAR tested for a 2 star result or both parents are 2 star thus resulting in 2 star females. Where one parent is 2 star and the other 1 star we have listed the lot as 1 star.

Westholme has not yet parent verified the calves and our embryo experiences and calf swapping experiences show that in a small percentage of calves there is an error in parentage. Because of this Westholme cannot at this stage 100% guarantee the parentage of calves as published.

The full printed sale catalogue will be mailed out in early April. To register for a catalogue, please email here, or fax or phone through your details.

Westholme Females

Largest Female Wagyu herd to leave Japan

Westholme purchased and exported to USA, 84 Japan born and registered Wagyu Fullblood breeding females. These females varied in Japan registration status from calf registration to Kihon (x20) and Hongen (x11) - the highest available status. Following collection of thousands of embryos from these females, the subsequent discovery of BSE in Japan led to the eventual purchase of the Westholme Japan exported females by the USDA (USA) and CFIA (Canada) followed by their euthanasia and autopsy. They were found completely clear of BSE in this testing procedure.

Japan Wagyu females generally fall into two groups:

Donor = Breeding female used for embryo production. Donor of embryos.

Recipient = Receiver of donor embryos (surrogate mother)

In Japan there is almost no natural mating of Wagyu.

One of the major contributors to the high quality of Japanese Wagyu in Japan is that only top quality male calves are kept as bulls and their semen is collected and distributed on a very restricted basis. Similarly top quality female calves are kept to become donors of embryos created by artificial matings with top quality registered Wagyu sires.

Westholme is developing its herd of donors on a gradual basis after culling of unsuitable breeding females. Our Wagyu herds previously in Canada, Texas & now solely in Australia are all based on Japan born and registered donors exported from Japan mated to semen from our 6 Japan registered sires 001, 002, 003 located at Hawkeye in Iowa and 005, 006, 007 previously located in Japan with semen exported to the USA.

Some of the donors based at Westholme Tarana NSW are shown in the following pictures. Details are as follows:-
